Chauncey was about to untie his shoes when 'Tom' asked him a question. "Of course I can", she could not see his face, but it sounded like he was smiling.
Before 'Tom' could say anything someone knocked on the door, "come in", Chauncey said resting his head on his fist having an amused grin drawn on his face.
A waiter entered with a plate of cheese and a lump of bread. Chauncey gestured to the table where the food got placed, and the waiter went out of the door again. He might have had a slightly dissapointed expression on his way out, probably he was expecting a tip, but didn't get any.
"Come sit", Chauncey said and pulled out a chair while breaking off a piece of bread, "I'm sure you must be just a little hungry?...... So what is this secret of yours?"

She sat down as instructed, startled by the waitor but relieved to take the bread. She was starving.
When they were alone she swallowed a mouthful of food and began to stutter her tale. "I... I don't have any parents.... and I can't go back... There are people out to get me.... because..." She paused, her every thought screaming at her to stop talking. Marcie had said never to tell ANYONE her story, and here she was blabbing it to a stranger.
What could she say that wasn't the truth? Think Danielle think! A thought struck her just in time, a book that she had read, the girl like her... but not like her... She could become that girl.
"When my grandfather died, my uncle sold me to a brothel to pay off his debts.... I escaped from the wagon just in time.... if he finds me.... well" she sniffed as tears began to roll down her face, real tears.
It was the most convincing lie she ever told. The best lies always have a bit of truth in them after all.

Chauncey was chewing unnaturally silent on his food while listening to 'Tom'. He didn't look at her, but took in every word she said. When she was finished he turned his eyes to look at her. A spark of compassion blinked in them, and then he smiled.
"Then we must make sure that does not happen", he leaned backwards stretching his leg as long as it could while still touching the ground, "as soon as I can afford a wagon and mount I plan to leave New York. Would you like to come with me?" Chauncey did not even think about trying to wrap in his offer, he was a direct man with no furhter ado... At least when he was not performing.
Lily and Rose had smelled the bread, and in no time was on the table nibbling to the white insides of it.

He believed her, she wiped her eyes and stuffed some of the dry yellow cheese in her mouth and listened to his offer, her eyes widening. Did she want to go with him? She didn't know. The girl knew that she didn't want to die, and she also knew that she liked this man although she couldn't quite understand why. She knew that his voice gave her a strange fluttering sensation in her gut but that may have been nerves, or fear. "Yes... Thank...thankyou... I mean but how can I... should I help with your shows?" she said at last, her mouth seeming to answer without her brains consent. She properly looked up into his eyes for the first time since she'd actually met him. He was younger than she'd expected, still much older than she was though. He sort of looked exotic too, his skin was much darker than her own. After a moment she caught herself staring at him and she quickly looked at the doves on the table instead.
"If I leave town I can be a girl again." she thought out loud, plucking at her shirt collar. It wasn't too clear why she said that last part.

Chauncey did not flicker or escape her glance. He had a pretty insense way of looking at people, but at least his grin was a comfort.
"I could use a beautiful assistant", he said agreeing and swallowed a piece of cheese - while his eyes swallowed her, "you can sleep on it if you want, I am in no hurry."
The bread was almost gone, and the magician rose to let his birds finish the rest. He didn't say it, but was most likely preparing to go to bed. What else could be the reason why he started to unbutton his vest. Also he didn't ordered 'Tom' to follow his example, she was old enough to decide that for herself. Then it dawned on him that he still only knew her alias - which he had made up for her.
"My name is Kahn, by the way. Chauncey is just a stage name, but you can call me both."

The girl blushed, she was hardly beautiful in her own opinion. Her face was covered in freckles and she was short and skinny with no breasts to speak of just yet. Still a child really, but she was about to grow up, leave town and go on an adventure. She was going to be a magicians assistant!
"My name is... Tove." she said shyly, watching him unbutton his vest. "I guess I'll get to sleep then sir...uhh Kahn." she said sheepishly and with those words she curled up on her bed like a cat, on top of the covers and making no effort to undress.
